✨ Why Do We Give Philosophy a Space in Our Lives?

1️⃣ What is Philosophy?

Philosophy comes from the Greek word philosophia (love of wisdom). It is humanity’s effort to understand the essence of life, knowledge, and values. Philosophy is not merely theory, but a way of thinking—critical, reflective, and profound—about fundamental questions: Who are we? What is the purpose of life? What is the meaning of truth?

2️⃣ What is a Philosopher?

A philosopher is someone who pursues wisdom through reflection, argumentation, and dialogue. A philosopher does not only collect knowledge but also interprets and gives direction to life. Throughout history, philosophers have often served as bridges between science, art, and ethics.

3️⃣ What is Philosophy (Philosofi)?

Philosophy in practice refers to the application of philosophical thought in specific contexts. For example: philosophy of life, philosophy of work, or philosophy of art. It is a principle or perspective derived from philosophical reflection, then used as a practical guide in daily life. Philosophy is closer to practice, while philosophy as a discipline is closer to theory and the search for essence.

4️⃣ What is Falsafah?

Falsafah is a borrowed term often used as a synonym for philosophy, but in Indonesian it emphasizes the aspect of way of life, worldview, and guiding principle. Falsafah arises from culture, tradition, and collective experience, then becomes a guide in everyday life as well as in national life.

The clearest example is Pancasila, which serves as the state’s falsafah in Indonesia. Pancasila is not merely theory, but the worldview, way of life, and guiding principle of the Indonesian people. It provides the foundation of values, policy direction, and ethical framework for the nation.

📘 The Five Principles of Pancasila:

  1. Belief in the One and Only God
  2. Just and civilized humanity
  3. The unity of Indonesia
  4. Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations among representatives
  5. Social justice for all the people of Indonesia

Thus, falsafah connects philosophical reflection with practical reality, bridging traditional wisdom and modern social systems.

✨ Pancasila as the Embodiment of Philosophia (Love of Wisdom)

1️⃣ Love for God

First principle: Belief in the One and Only God
→ Shows how love is manifested in the relationship between humans and God.

2️⃣ Love for Humanity

Second principle: Just and civilized humanity
→ Shows how love is manifested in justice and civility toward fellow human beings.

3️⃣ Love for Nation and State

Third principle: The unity of Indonesia
→ Shows how love is manifested in maintaining the unity and cohesion of the nation.

4️⃣ Wisdom in Democracy

Fourth principle: Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations among representatives
→ Shows how wisdom is manifested in deliberation, democracy, and wise leadership.

5️⃣ Wisdom in Social Justice

Fifth principle: Social justice for all the people of Indonesia
→ Shows how wisdom is manifested in ensuring social justice for all citizens.

✨ Practices of Philosophers

1️⃣ Literary Expression (Sastra Pujangga)

Philosophers often turn to literature as a medium of wisdom. Through poetry, prose, and allegory, they weave reflections on life, justice, and truth into narratives that inspire and challenge society. Literature becomes a vessel for philosophy, allowing ideas to live not only in abstract reasoning but also in the beauty of language and imagination.

2️⃣ Pragmatic Knowledge (Pengetahuan Pragmatis)

Philosophy is not confined to theory; it seeks application. Philosophers strive to connect abstract thought with practical life, shaping principles that guide daily actions. This pragmatic dimension ensures that wisdom is not detached from reality but becomes a compass for decision-making, ethics, and human interaction.

3️⃣ Political Engagement (Politik)

Since ancient Greece, philosophers have been deeply involved in politics—sometimes as advisors, sometimes as critics, and sometimes as leaders themselves. Politics provides a stage where philosophical ideals of justice, freedom, and responsibility are tested. Philosophers remind society that governance must be rooted in wisdom, not merely in power.

🌟 Further Developments

Beyond these three, philosophers also practice in other domains:

  • Science and Knowledge: Many philosophers laid the foundations of modern science, emphasizing observation, logic, and critical inquiry.
  • Ethics and Morality: They construct frameworks of right and wrong, shaping laws, religions, and social norms.
  • Education: Philosophers often serve as teachers, guiding students to think critically and seek wisdom through dialogue.
  • Spirituality and Contemplation: Some emphasize meditation, prayer, or inner reflection as a path to deeper understanding of existence.

✨ Philosophy Across Languages

🌙 Arabic: فلسفة (falsafa)

In Arabic, falsafa refers to the intellectual tradition that emerged during the translation of Greek works into Arabic. It is not only a synonym for philosophy but also reflects the effort to integrate reason with revelation, science, and culture. Here, philosophy is understood as a path of seeking truth, uniting rational inquiry with spiritual dimensions.

🏛 Greek: φιλοσοφία (philosophía)

The original Greek term philosophía comes from philo (φίλο) or philein (φιλεῖν), meaning love, to love, or beloved, and sophia (σοφία), meaning wisdom, knowledge, or insight. Thus, philosophía literally means love of wisdom. This root highlights that philosophy is not merely an academic pursuit but a heartfelt attitude: to love wisdom, to seek truth, and to cherish knowledge as something of great value.

📜 Latin: philosophia

In Latin, philosophia was inherited from Greek and became the foundation of European intellectual traditions. Latin emphasizes philosophy as a systematic discipline, shaping the academic framework that later gave rise to universities and Western scholarship. From this tradition, philosophy developed into branches such as logic, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology, which remain the pillars of modern knowledge.

📖 Based on the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI)

According to the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), philosophy is knowledge and investigation through reason concerning the essence of existence, its causes, its origins, and its laws. Philosophy is also defined as a theory that underlies thought or activity, as well as a discipline centered on logic, aesthetics, metaphysics, and epistemology. This definition emphasizes philosophy as a rational framework for exploring the foundations of life and knowledge.

From this, we can see how vast and profound the meaning of “love of wisdom” truly is. Yet when this love of wisdom is placed in the wrong hands or the wrong context, it can become a form of logical fallacy—a distortion of reasoning—and even slander. Wisdom without integrity can be weaponized, and philosophy without ethics can mislead.

🌟 Reflection

  • Giving space to philosophy means opening ourselves to critical thinking, searching for meaning, and balancing theory with practice. Philosophy provides the framework, philosophers provide the model of inquiry, philosophy (philosofi) provides practical direction, and falsafah provides cultural roots, worldview, way of life, and guiding principle. Together, these four help us live more consciously, wisely, and meaningfully.
  • Thus, Pancasila can be understood as a falsafah that brings to life the meaning of philosophia—love of wisdom—across five dimensions: God, humanity, nation, wisdom, and justice. This unity strengthens the motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), affirming that diversity remains united under one shared philosophy of life.
  • Philosophers, through their diverse practices, reveal that philosophy is not an ivory tower detached from life but a pulse that flows through literature, knowledge, politics, science, ethics, education, and spirituality. Literary expression shows that wisdom can be born from the beauty of language; pragmatic knowledge affirms that ideas must be grounded in reality; politics reminds us that power without wisdom loses its direction. When philosophers engage in science, they instill critical methods that gave rise to modern knowledge. In ethics, they guide us to weigh right and wrong, justice and injustice. In education, they serve as teachers who ignite dialogue and reflection. In spirituality, they invite us to look inward, seeking meaning beyond routine. Thus, the practices of philosophers are bridges between the world of ideas and the world of reality. They bring philosophia—love of wisdom—into every dimension of life, ensuring that philosophy does not remain theory but becomes a guiding principle that leads humanity toward awareness, wisdom, and justice.
  • Across languages, philosophy reveals itself as a universal bridge of meaning:

    • In Indonesian (KBBI), it is rational inquiry into essence and truth.
    • In Arabic, it is the integration of reason and spirituality.
    • In Greek, it is love of wisdom.
    • In Latin, it is systematic discipline and intellectual tradition.

Together, these perspectives show that philosophy is a universal quest: born from love of wisdom, nurtured by culture, and serving as a guiding principle for humanity across time and language.

  • Philosophy demands not only intelligence, but also responsibility. The deeper the wisdom, the greater the need for discernment. When philosophy is practiced with sincerity, it becomes a light. But when misused, it can become a shadow that distorts truth. That is why giving space to philosophy must always be accompanied by ethical awareness and clarity of purpose.
